If you are planning a Beijing layover tour, one of the first things to consider is which airport you are using.
Beijing has two major international airports:
PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport)
PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport)
Both can be used for sightseeing during a layover, but the experience may be slightly different depending on your route.
For many travelers, PEK is often the more familiar option for a Beijing layover tour. It has long been the main airport used by international visitors, and many traditional layover routes are commonly arranged from there.
If your goal is to visit the Great Wall, PEK can often feel more convenient depending on the exact timing and destination. Many travelers who want a classic layover trip to Mutianyu or another Great Wall section find PEK easier to work with.
PKX, on the other hand, is newer and very modern. It is an impressive airport, but because of its location, your sightseeing route may feel a little different. A Beijing layover tour from PKX is still very possible, but practical timing becomes especially important.
So which airport is better for sightseeing?
The honest answer is that both can work well, but the “better” airport depends on:
how long your layover is
whether you want the Great Wall or city highlights
your arrival and departure times
traffic conditions on that day
If your top goal is the Great Wall, some travelers may find PEK a more natural choice. If your layover is based at PKX, the trip can still be excellent, but the route should be planned carefully.
This is why private layover tours are so useful. Instead of guessing what is realistic from your airport, you can build the day around your actual flight schedule and available time.
Another important point is that travelers should avoid comparing airports only in theory. What matters most is not which airport is “best” in general. What matters is which airport works best for your actual layover.
A short layover from PKX may need a different plan from a long layover from PEK.A city sightseeing route may work better than the Great Wall in some cases. In other cases, the Great Wall may still be perfectly realistic.
A good Beijing layover tour begins with one simple question:What is the most rewarding route from my airport, with my time?
Once you answer that, the airport becomes much less confusing.
